How much does term life cost?

Term Life Costs Less Than Most People Think

For a healthy non-smoker, a $500,000 policy that lasts 20 years can cost less than a streaming subscription or two each month. The younger and healthier you are when you apply, the lower your price, and it stays locked in for the whole term.

Your exact price depends on your age, health, tobacco use, coverage amount and the company. That is why we compare several companies for you.

Term life basics

What Is Term Life Insurance?

Short answer: Term life insurance pays a set amount of money to the people you choose if you pass away during a set period, usually 10 to 30 years. Your price is locked in for the whole term. It is the simplest and most affordable way to protect your family while your income and your mortgage matter most.

Planning for retirement

Term Life Insurance for Pre-Retirees in Florida

In your 50s and early 60s, term life is less about young children and more about getting you and your spouse safely to retirement. Here is how it fits.

Cover the Years Until Retirement

Match your term to the year you plan to retire and your savings can replace your paycheck. A 10 or 15 year term often fits the last stretch before retirement.

Estimate how much you need

Protect a Pension Choice

If you are thinking about a single-life pension for a larger monthly check, life insurance can be one way to protect your spouse. Compare both options carefully, because the pension choice is usually permanent.

Pay Off the Mortgage First

Many couples want the house paid off before they retire. A term policy sized to the mortgage keeps that plan on track if one of you dies first.

Buying in Your 60s

Many companies offer term life to people in their 60s and some into their 70s, usually with 10 or 15 year terms. Prices rise with age and health, so earlier is usually less expensive.

Work Coverage Ends When You Retire

Group life through your employer usually ends or becomes expensive to keep when you leave. Lock in your own policy while you are working and healthy.

Convert Without a New Exam

Many term policies let you convert to permanent coverage without a new medical exam, as long as you do it before the policy's conversion deadline. Ask about this option before you buy.

Keep the House in the Family, No Matter What

Mortgage protection is term life insurance sized to your mortgage, so if something happens to you, your family can pay off the house or keep making the payments.

Got a "mortgage protection" letter after you closed? Those letters are common after buying or refinancing. They are not from your lender or the government. We can give you a second opinion and compare real quotes, with no obligation.
  • Pays your family directly, not the bank
  • Coverage can stay level while your loan balance shrinks
  • Stays with you if you sell, move or refinance

Term vs. permanent

Term Life vs. Whole Life: Which Is Right for You?

Most families start with term because it gives the most coverage for the lowest price. Permanent coverage can make sense for lifelong needs like final expenses or leaving a legacy.

Frequently asked questions

Term Life Insurance FAQs

How much does term life insurance cost?

It depends on your age, health, tobacco use, coverage amount and term length. As a guide, 2026 prices for a $500,000, 20-year policy in the best health class start around $15 to $18 a month at age 30 and $23 to $28 a month at age 40. Most people pay somewhat more depending on their health. A free quote shows your actual price.

How much term life insurance do I need?

Many families use the DIME method: add your debts, the income your family would need to replace, your mortgage balance and future education costs. Our calculator above gives you a starting point, and we fine-tune it with you.

What is mortgage protection insurance?

Mortgage protection is usually a term life policy sized to your mortgage. If you pass away during the term, your beneficiaries receive the money and can pay off the home or keep making payments. Unlike PMI, it protects your family, not the lender.

Is mortgage protection the same as PMI?

No. Private mortgage insurance protects your lender if you stop making payments and pays nothing to your family. Mortgage protection life insurance pays your beneficiaries if you pass away.

What happens when my term ends?

Coverage ends unless you renew or convert it. Many term policies let you convert to permanent coverage before the term ends without new medical questions, and some can be renewed year by year at a higher price.

Can I get term life insurance without a medical exam?

Often, yes. Many companies offer accelerated underwriting with no exam for healthy applicants, usually up to certain ages and coverage amounts. Fully underwritten policies may offer better pricing, and we show you both.

Is the death benefit taxable?

Life insurance death benefits are generally income-tax-free to beneficiaries under federal law, and Florida has no state income tax. Neither the firm nor its agents or representatives may give tax or legal advice.

Can I buy term life insurance after 60?

Yes. Many companies offer term policies to people in their 60s and some into their 70s, usually with shorter terms such as 10 or 15 years. Prices rise with age and health, so a policy bought at 60 costs more than one bought at 50, but term is usually still less expensive than permanent coverage.

Is life insurance through work enough?

For many families it is not. Group coverage is often one or two times your salary and usually ends when you leave the job. An individual term policy stays with you.

Can I get term life with a health condition?

Often, yes. Companies look at health differently, so a condition that raises your price with one company may be treated better by another. That is a big reason to compare several companies.

How fast can coverage start?

With no-exam options, some applicants are approved in days. Fully underwritten policies usually take a few weeks. We help you through each step.
